Throughout the years, our Low Countries have continuously proven themselves as an interesting place for contemporary art, building on a rich history towards a vibrant present. With its large audiences for culture, Belgium and the Netherlands have long been places that actively seek connections with other art scenes throughout Europe and beyond. In recent years, there’s been a rise in art weeks and weekends, that actively work on connecting local scenes to international audiences, while enhancing internal cohesion amongst their players.
On the occasion of the fair, three such organizations from Antwerp, Amsterdam, and Brussels, are entering a conversation on their shared goals, and the role of art week(ends) in enhancing and supporting local art scenes.
Speakers: Laure Decock (RendezVous − Brussels Art Week), Martina Halsema (Amsterdam Art Week), Tim Verherstraeten (Antwerp Art Weekend).
Amsterdam Art Week celebrates the diversity of the Amsterdam art scene. Artists, galleries, collectors, experimental project spaces, and renowned residencies come together, complemented by fresh perspectives from both domestic and international sources. For one week, the city is alive with contemporary art, featuring more than 300 artists, across over 70 locations, and nearly 250 events and exhibitions, spread throughout the compact and charming capital. With exhibitions in galleries and presentations of both private and museum collections, this 13th edition promises to be versatile and inspiring.
Since 2014, Antwerp Art highlights and connects Antwerp’s vibrant contemporary art scene by promoting and communicating the programs of its members via antwerpart.be, our social media, monthly newsletter, and through organizing the annual Antwerp Art Weekend: a four day citywide manifestation where art spaces in and around Antwerp join forces to celebrate contemporary art. The 2025 edition takes place from 29.05-01.06.
Wim Delvoye au Grand-Duché de Luxembourg
by Enrico Lunghi
The talk “Wim Delvoye in Luxembourg” is about the many astonishing shows and projects that the famous Belgian artist realized in the little country next to his, from the first solo exhibition at Galerie Beaumont in 1994 to the big retrospective at Mudam in 2016. It reflects also the bond that was established, over almost thirty years, between Wim and Enrico: a story of unexpected twists and turns, which also takes a look that is both historical and critical at the emergence of contemporary art in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and which will soon be published in a book full of surprising and often funny anecdotes (more information soon).
Enrico Lunghi is an art historian, former artistic director of the Casino Luxembourg – Forum d’art contemporain and then general director of Mudam Luxembourg. He has curated numerous exhibitions in Luxembourg and elsewhere. In addition to his writings on contemporary artists, he has published several fictions that explore his relationship with art and the world.
After the talk, a book signing session will take place at 3 PM at Rodolphe Janssen booth at Art Brussels.
FRED&FERRY: Marion De Cannière Prize
For the second time, the Marion De Cannière Prize will be awarded to a young promising artist.
At the initiative of Frederik Vergaert and the family of Marion De Cannière, an incentive prize has been established to honor her work and dedication.
This prize will be awarded to a young, emerging artist who, undeterred by trends, embraces experimentation with boldness and conviction. Through innovative insights and a distinctive visual language, the honoree adds new layers to their artistic practice.
All forms of artistic expression are considered, including sculpture, painting, photography, conceptual art, performance, digital art, film, and video.
The award consists of a cash prize and an exhibition at FRED&FERRY. This year, candidates were nominated by a select group of curators, while the jury comprised all the gallery’s artists.
The first artist to receive this honor was Laurence Petrone. The new laureate will be announced during Art Brussels on Sunday, April 27 at 2 p.m.
