Monitor was founded by Paola Capata in 2003.
Since the beginning of its activity, the Gallery has worked to provide artists with spaces and contexts that allow for an experimental approach to exhibitions. During its early years, it focused on emerging international artists with a deep emphasis on video. Since 2010, the Gallery has expanded its focus to other media, particularly painting. In 2014, Paola Capata opened a pop-up space in New York, MONITOR Studio, which concluded in 2015. After this experience, in 2017, the permanent Lisbon branch was opened. In September 2024 it will launch Mel in Porto. This initiative will see a year-long collaboration between the Monitor gallery and the Portuguese gallery Lehmann.
